Crafting the Future of Thurrock; Craft Trade School


The Crafts Council, Thurrock Council and Metal Culture are looking for traditional craft practitioners to plan and deliver workshops on the new education programme Craft Trade School.

The project is a new initiative to up-skill young people working in, or looking to work in, construction, production, or other related areas. It aims to enhance employability skills, encourage creativity, and ignite a passion for craft within the future workforce.

Craft Trade School are looking to work with 90 young people through a series of six taster workshops and four masterclasses, based in Thurrock. We are looking for makers from across disciplines – weaving/metal work/glass blowing/ceramics etc. You must have a passion for working with young people and previous experience of developing and running workshops with this age range.

Deadline 24 January 2017. The first workshops will take place in February 2017.


The successful makers will work alongside the Project Manager and partner organisations to deliver either one off or a short series of traditional craft workshops, based in Thurrock.
The workshops are aimed at young people between GCSE level, up to the age of 25.
Workshops will take place in various location across Thurrock including – but not limited to – makers workshops, schools, collages, Council buildings, and parks/outdoor spaces.
The fee for each day/workshop will will be £250, inclusive of VAT, travel, and expenses. There is a separate budget for materials and equipment.
You will be expected to attend the end of year exhibition/celebration in Summer 2017 and to contribute towards evaluation and data collection when requested.
A complete DBS check is required.
All work and images produced is for use by the Crafts Council and partners.


Please include the following in your application.
– CV with relevant experience
– Proposal for the workshops – how will you respond to the project/challenge?
– Statement outlining your suitability for the work
– Evidence of your suitability for the work, including demonstrating relevant experience in delivering making projects, teaching and working as a maker
– Two references, one that knows you in a teaching capacity and one who knows you from the making side of your practise.

Craft Trade School is a response to the need within Thurrock to develop a highly skilled workforce, embedding traditional craft skills within construction and related industries. It aims to work with young people either studying, on an apprenticeship, or at an early stage in their career, to ignite a passion for crafts within their industry.
